Headstone Inscriptions: Eight Key Points

  1. Headstone inscriptions are completed all year long provided the weather is consistently above 40 degrees and there is no snow or ice on the ground.
  2. Before pricing a headstone inscription project, your monument company needs to see the headstone in person or via a photograph. This ensures that we are pricing the project correctly.
  3. Part of the fee you are charged for inscription services includes a rubbing of the monument and a measurement of the dimensions.  Without this information a design cannot be produced.
  4. Your fee also includes graphic designs services to ensure precise font matching,  spelling and date accuracy.
  5. The new inscription should match the existing lettering on the headstone.  Fonts should be matched exactly by type, style and dimensions.  If the design does not match the font on the existing monument, ask why.
  6. There are many options other than replacing the headstone if there is no room for an inscription.   Your monument company will advise you of the possible options and costs (adding a bevel, mid-base or engraving on the top of the base or back side of the monument).
  7. Set a timeline for which you need the headstone inscribed and make sure your monument company knows your absolute deadlines for ceremonies and anniversary dates.  Inscription services require a good deal of time, often 6 to 8 weeks of planning.  To avoid disappointment, communicate your needs and plan ahead.
  8. Once the inscription has been completed your monument company should send you a photograph or let you know that the work has been completed.
