Headstone Buying Tips

  1. Headstones minimum and maximum dimensions and styles are different for double and single plots.  Your monument company will advise you of the dimensions permitted in your plot.
  2. Photos, etchings and vases may or may not be permitted in your cemetery.  Your monument company will advise you of these regulations.
  3. Keep in mind that all cemeteries charge a concrete foundation fee and some also charge a setting fee. These fees are in addition to the monument you purchase.  The fee is based on the dimensions of the monument or base purchased.
  4. Before you begin the buying process, look at monuments and markers in the cemeteries and take photographs of features you like.
  5. Look at the  granite color and decide which colors you prefer.
  6. Look at the lettering to identify fonts, lettering styles and colors you prefer.,
  7. Look at the layout of the monument to identify whether you prefer steeled box panels for the surname (last name) and birth and passing information.  If you do not like panels, then the lettering will be placed in the polish without panel boxes.
  8. Try to decide what artwork you prefer, florals, religious, birds or other artwork you have in mind.
  9. Learn the difference between flat sandblasted images versus shaped carved images and the cost differential
  10. Decide on your headstone top style: curved serpentine top, round, angled or flat top.  If you are not sure, your monument company will advise you based on your needs and budget.
  11. Look at the sides of the monument and base. Decide if you want rough (rock pitch) or polished sides.
  12. Ask your monument company for design proofs that you can edit with input from family and friends. This will ensure your monument is perfect once it’s completed.
  13. Ask your monument company if you can see your monument before it is installed via a photo or in person.
  14. Set a timeline for which you need your headstone installed and make sure your monument company knows your absolute deadlines for ceremonies and anniversary dates.
  15. Contact your monument company after it has been installed if you have concerns or need the headstone cleaned periodically.
